Torsional failures are the most frequent failure mode of tool joints. Most failures are caused by downhole make-up due to excessive torque. To combat this problem, a high torque connector has been developed that is capable of transmitting 40% more torque than a conventional tool joint of the same nominal size. The high torque connector utilizes a secondary shoulder on the nose of the pin and a mating shoulder in the box. When the connector is tightened to the recommended make-up torque, the secondary shoulders do not contact. If an over-torque situation is encountered and further tightening, or downhole make-up occurs, the secondary shoulders will make contact and retard additional make-up. This provides the increase in the connector's torque capacity.
