Vary speed of Claus blowers

Variable speed drives are uniquely applicable for use with the air blower in Claus sulfur recovery units (SRUs). Analysis shows the cost of variable speed drives is frequently justified on energy evaluation involving examination of the characteristics of SRUs and peculiarities of air blowers in SRU operation. Results of typical situations suggest that owners of SRUs used with gas plants should make an effort to establish duty cycles and look carefully at the variable speed option. This is particularly true if plans call for an SRU expansion or for occasional peaks of capacity. Experience in refinery SRU operation suggest that variable speed drives are usually justified. On the other hand, capital can be conserved by considering constant speed machines for standby duty. In addition to economy, variable speed drives have another powerful benefit because they operate as a highly linear, very responsive final control element in lieu of or in addition to a control valve, thus improving control of the tail gas composition.
