Taking as the starting material the Aurivillius oxide Bi[sub 2]SrNb[sub 2]O[sub 9], it has been demonstrated for the first time that the (Bi[sub 2]O[sub 2])[sup 2+] layers can be doped with the Pb[sup 2+] cation, which also possesses a stereochemically active lone pair. Samples of composition Bi[sub 2 [minus] x]Pb[sub x]SrNb[sub 2]O[sub y] have been prepared and yield a solid solution over the entire range 0 [le] x [le] 2. The substitution of Pb[sup 2+] is accompanied by the occurrence of oxygen vacancies, in order to compensate the reduced cation charge.
