Water problems in Alberta oilsands development

Journal Article · · Amer. Water Resources Ass. Water Resources Problems Related to Mining Mtg. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6570641
The subject was presented in 4 stages: (1) a general survey of the Alberta oil-sands resource and the status of its development, (2) a review of internal water balance patterns for the major plants, (3) a discussion of external water balance relationships, and (4) suggestions of alternatives. The oil-sands are located in NE. and N-central Alberta with current development north of Fort McMurray about 300 miles from Edmonton. The Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board has estimated the oil content of these sands as 895 billion bbl. The present surface mining is being done about 20 to 25 miles north of Fort McMurray to the west of the Athabasca River. Very large-scale operations and a large amount of water are to be used in the extracting and upgrading operations.
