Though hard-pressed for operating funds, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority has some $2 billion to invest in either upgrading existing commuter rail services or constructing an extension to its rapid transit system to meet increasing commuter demands in the Boston area. The commuter rail upgrade could cost $143 million and increase ridership by 16.1%. The extension could cost $225 million and increase ridership by 27.5%. MBTA officials seem inclined toward the commuter rail alternative while commuters favor extension of the rapid transit system. The merits and drawbacks of each alternative are examined.
