Differential and total cross sections for the reactions /sup 10/B(..gamma..,..pi../sup +/)/sup 10/Be and /sup 16/O(..gamma..,..pi../sup +/)/sup 16/N are calculated from pion threshold through the (3,3) resonance within the framework of the distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA). Nuclear wave functions are employed which are consistent with, among other data, transverse (e,e') scattering and pion distortions are included via an optical potential which reproduces low energy ..pi..-nucleus scattering information. Results are compared to experiment and to recent DWIA calculations which differ in their treatment of the elementary photoproduction operator, nuclear wave functions, and ..pi..-nucleus optical potential. Generally, calculated results are in much better agreement with each other than with experiment. Reasons for the discrepancies between theory and experiment are offered and suggestions for future investigations are outlined.
