Hydrogenolysis of neopentane and n-pentane over Rh/(..gamma..)-Al/sub 2/0/sub 3/ catalyst, with 5.1Vertical Bar3< rhodium was studied under the auspices of the Inter-Industry Emission Control Program. Measurements in a recycle reactor at 161/sup 0/-190/sup 0/C showed that 10:1 neopentane-hydrogen in helium reacts sequentially by successive breaking off of methane molecules. The hydrogenolysis of n-pentane at 90/sup 0/-110/sup 0/C proceeded by two parallel reactions, of which the main path produced ethane and propane and the slower reaction methane and butane. Both pentane hydrogenolyses were first order in pentane, -1.5 order in hydrogen, and proceeded via an (..cap alpha..),(..cap alpha..),(..gamma..)-triadsorbed intermediate. The intermediate of the main n-pentane hydrogenolysis reaction was the 2,2,4-triadsorbed form, and of the minor reaction the 1,1,3-triadsorbed form.
