Effects of dissolver solids on SRC-1 reaction rates

In an attempt to determine the effects of dissolver solids on reaction rates of commercial-size coal dissolvers, Wilsonville filter cake and Kerr-McGee ash concentrate (K-MAC) were used to simulate dissolver solids, and these materials were added to the feed slurry, coal and solvent, to the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) of International Coal Refining Company's coal process development unit (CPDU). The maximum concentration of solids in the CPDU was approx. 10 to 15 lb/ft/sup 2/ while in the Wilsonville dissolver the concentration was commonly at the 20 to 30 lb/ft/sup 2/ level or higher. Filter cake was found to catalyze preasphaltene conversion (kinetic rate constant increased by 50%) and process-solvent hydrogenation (hydrogen gas consumption increased by a factor of 2.5). Weaker evidence was noted for catalysis of asphaltene conversion. K-MAC ash concentrate was less catalytic than filter cake. Findings of these experiments indicate that dissolver solids are catalysts in SRC-1 process. (BLM)
