Modeling subsidence due to geothermal fluid production

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6563724
Subsidence of a geothermal system due to fluid withdrawal may be modeled using a dual reservoir-overburden model, in which the reservoir is assumed to deform according to Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory, while the overburden deforms due to arbitrary boundary loading in the form of displacements imposed at its interface with the reservoir. This paper is concerned only with the reservoir part of the dual reservoir-overburden model leading to the computation of the vertical displacements at the top of the reservoir. The governing equations and numerical model are presented. Illustrative examples are given to demonstrate the capability of the program. (MHR)
