Effect of burner design and operational factors on the emission of nitrogen oxides when burning an anthracite/slurry mixture
An investigation into the effect of the design features of the burners and of their arrangement in the furnace chamber on NO/sub x/ emission when burning anthracite/slurry mixtures in thermal power plants in the USSR is reported. Tests were carried out on the standard and modified TPP-110, T-90, TP-70 and TP-230 boilers which are of different designs and steam outputs. Calculations, carried out with allowance for the limiting allowable NO/sub 2/ and SO/sub 2/ concentrations showed that when burning anthracite and slurry the harmful action of the nitrogen oxides discharged to atmosphere with the flue gases is 40% of the total toxic action of the NO/sub 2/ and SO/sub 2/ formed with combustion. When burning a mixture of anthracite and Kuznetsk coal the proportion of toxic nitrogen oxides in the overall toxicity of the emissions from the power stations was 60%. The data obtained permitted assessment of the relative number of noxious emissions from the various boilers with allowance for the chimney height at the point of maximum concentration of the gases in the air. The change in the ratio of the reduced concentrations of SO/sub 2/ and NO/sub 2/ with partial shutting off of boilers is compared to its value at rated capacity of the station. The calculation shows that about 60% of the pollution of the atmosphere in the region of the power station is caused by emissions from the 100 m high chimney serving the obsolete TP-230-2 and TP-70 boilers which provide only about 25% of the station's capacity. Erecting higher chimneys when reconstructing stations and replacing obsolete plant enables the NO/sub 2/ concentration in the air to be at least halved, without reducing the station capacity.
