Drillstring vibration measurements detect bit stick-slip

Journal Article · · Oil and Gas Journal; (United States)
OSTI ID:6561452
A surface tool which measures downhole vibrations helps detect changes in torque and speed at the bit to eliminate the inefficient drilling condition, stick-slip. During stick-slip, the rotational speed at the surface remains constant while the rotational speed of the bit can vary from 0 rpm to several times the surface speed. This is the second of two articles on the use of the drilling dynamics sub to measure drillstring vibrations. The first article covered detection of various inefficient drilling conditions. This article describes the dynameter tool, torsional vibrations, rotational speed, lubricants, the weight on the bit, and remedies.
