Engineering study of coalbed degasification in the Warrior Basin of Alabama
This project was an engineering study of coalbed methane extraction in the Warrior Basin of Alabama. The coal lithology logs and the production histories of major degasification fields in the Warrier Basin were studied in detail. A comparative analysis of gas and water production of different wells was conducted to evaluate open hole completions and through-casing completions. A similar analysis was made to evaluate different stimulation techniques. Attempts were made to evaluate the relations between the uncemented portions. Logs from The University of Alabama's corehole program and the production well were analyzed. Laboratory experiments were conducted to establish the porosities and permeability of the cores obtained from zones adjacent to the producing zones of the University's production well. The results indicated that the water would be much lower, unless fractures have propagated into these zones. The results of water analysis show no indication of freshwater channeling. An experiment has been proposed to make a comparative evaluation of different stimulation techniques. A preliminary study has been completed to explore the possibility of using chemicals for increasing permeability in coal. Further research in this area might result in significantly improving methods for stimulation of these coal seams. 29 references, 19 figures, 5 tables.
