The paper is concerned with US Bureau of Mines work on the reduction of respirable dust generated by cutting bits on the coal face. Coal cutting design concepts are considered that minimise dust generation, energy used and ignitions, while maintaining production. With present equipment, an operator can maintain production and minimise dust generation by cutting at maximum depth at all times (maximum sumping or advance rate), at minimum rpm with fewest possible bits and with lowest possible included bit tip angle, i.e. minimum bit wear.
