Froth flotation desulfurization of high-sulfur coal

Journal Article · · Miner. Matters; (United States)

Froth flotation cells have been successfully utilized for a long time in many mineral processing plants and in coal preparation plants for recovering fine coal, but none have been utilized for desulfurizing thermal coal. In the authors labs, they are presently establishing optimum operating parameters for desulfurizing Illinois Basin coals. Such parameters for ten representative samples of high-sulfur coal obtained from different areas in Illinois have now been developed. The total sulfur in these samples has been consistently reduced to less than 1.4% (to as low as 1.25%) from coals as high as 5.3% sulfur in the original feed.
