Heat exchanger fouling in a coal-fired fluidized bed combustor

Operating experience with fouling of a finned tube flue gas heat exchanger is described. The heat exchanger is located in the convection pass of an industrial type, pilot-sized coal-fired atmospheric fluidized bed combustor using a forced circulation water/glycol coolant loop. Values of heat transfer coefficient were calculated from actual run data, and compared with design values. It was found that condensation on the fins caused excessive fouling, due to accumulation of elutriated limestone and coal ash. Various solutions were tried, and the results of each attempt are described.
