Production of e/sup +/e/sup -/ pairs in collisions of fast nuclei with heavy atoms

The Bethe--Maximon--Davies theory is generalized to the case of e/sup +/e/sup -/-pair production by a virtual space-like photon. Such a photon can be emitted by a fast and heavy (compared to the electron) particle with relatively small charge (..cap alpha..Z'<<1). The cross section is calculated for the case where only a small fraction of the incident-particle energy goes into pair production. It is shown that the Coulomb correction to the cross section integrated over the electron and positron emission angles has the same form as in pair production by a real photon.
