Successful applications of point-to-point direct current links world-wide show power system planners that three-terminal dc (3TDC) and multi-terminal dc (MTDC) schemes will be the vehicles to fully use economic and technical advantages of HVDC technology in the future. Research studies conclude that MTDC systems are feasible without any major technical limitations. Several existing dc links have operated as an MTDC system during emergency conditions. The control principles for MTDC systems are a natural extension of those already existing for 2TDC systems with only a few additional control functions for balancing terminal current orders. Techniques for both centralized and decentralized balancing are available. Either dc breakers or fast switches in conjunction with converter control action can clear faults. 5 references, 4 figures.
