The 5-county area of SE. Colorado consists of approx. 9,100 sq miles or 5,824,000 acres on which 26 oil and gas fields have been discovered since 1952. At least 25 different zones produce from the Pennsylvanian and Mississippian age with significant shows in numerous other zones. Present in the area are the tectonic influences of Apishapa-Sierra Grande uplift and the Las Animas arch. A portion of 2 major structural basins (Denver Basin and the Hugoton Embayment of the Anadarko Basin) is present in this area connected by the Pennsylvanian trough. Structurally and stratigraphically SE. Colorado has the oil and gas production potential as that of the adjacent prolific producing Oklahoma Panhandle and SW. Kansas area. The pattern of deposition is very similar. There are at least 20 surface anticlinal features that need drilling, having an average drilling depth of less than 5,500, ft.
