Stability of the refractory-bond phases in high alumina refractories in steam--CO atmospheres

Conference · · Am. Ceram. Soc. Bull.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6556319
The chemical resistance of the bond phases in a dense fired alumina, phosphate-bonded ramming mix and calcium aluminate cement-bonded castable to five steam--CO atmospheres at 385, 750, and 1015 psia and approx. = 260 and approx. = 950/sup 0/C was evaluated from physical property changes, x-ray diffraction, DTA/TGA and Auger electron spectroscopy. A decrease in the modulus of rupture for the dense fired alumina exposed to steam-containing atmospheres at approx. = 260/sup 0/C corresponded to an increase in Ca segregation at the external surfaces. The AIPO/sub 4/-bond phase was sensitive to saturated steam only. The calcium aluminate cement-bond phases reacted to form CaCO/sub 3/, Ca(HCO/sub 2/)/sub 2/, AIO(OH) (boehmite) and hydrated calcium aluminate phases.
