This patent describes a process for removing CO{sub 2} and other acid gases from a normally gaseous mixture. It comprises: contacting the normally gaseous mixture under absorption conditions with an aqueous scrubbing solution comprising: one or more alkali metal salts; and as the sole sterically hindred amino compound acid gas absorption promoters, one or more primary sterically hindred amino acids; and desorbing at least a portion of the absorbed CO{sub 2} from the solution.
