OSHA kicks off new standards-planning process
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced it is developing a new standards-planning process. According to OSHA, the new system will ensure that the agency's limited resources are directed appropriately and result in the promulgation of standards and other appropriate agency actions that have the maximum public health impact. Industry and other stakeholders should monitor this initiative carefully. As part of its reinventing government exercise, OSHA has assigned the development of priorities under its new standards planning process to an internal Standards-Planning committee. The committee will be assisted by experts from other government agencies, including the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the American Congress of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), among others, and will seek public input on its decisions. The primary task of the Standards Planning Committee is to develop a list of up to 50 workplace hazards or issues that warrant appropriate OSHA action. This list is the OSHA Action List. For each item on the list, the committee will recommend appropriate OSHA action, including a rulemaking, revisions to existing standards, the issuance of a hazard alert and enhanced enforcement or consultation.
