Energy and utilities: a detailed look at more than 100 public opinion polls

Journal Article · · Electr. Perspect.; (United States)

Information gathered from over 100 studies on how the public perceives the energy crisis was analyzed and evaluated by the survey research division of Hill and Knowlton, Inc. While Americans recognize the existence of an energy problem, few see themselves as either personally affected or responsible for finding solutions. Their major concerns are economic ones. Some polls show that Americans are beginning to appreciate the complexities of the issues, although they are often skeptical of the information they receive. No personal commitment to conservation emerges from the responses. Environmental issues often take precedence over energy supply even though surveys show more people give energy a higher priority than pollution control. The public feels all energy options should be explored and is frustrated by the government's inability to decide on a National Energy Plan. The public is satisfied with the performance of utility service but is negative about utilities per se.
