By recycling off-spec products during startup, shutdown and upsets, as much as $250,000 can be saved per startup including product and feedstock lost. It has not been economic to provide storage for the off-specification ethylene and propylene streams produced either during startup or unit upsets. Such storage, whether high pressure or a refrigerated lower pressure system, is expensive and difficult to justify based on its infrequent use. Thus it has become common to flare these non-marketable streams during both startup and upset conditions with the resultant hydrocarbon loss. Also environmental problems can be created especially in communities sensitive to abnormal heat, light, smoke or noise.
