Preparation of low molecular weight aliphatic alcohols by direct hydration of olefins on zeolites

Journal Article · · Pet. Chem. USSR (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
Synthetic zeolites with Ca, rare earth elements, Cr, and Ni cations were used as catalysts for the hydration of ethylene, propylene, and isobutylene. For the hydration of C/sub 2/ - C/sub 4/ olefins, better hydration was obtained using a chromo-exchange form of N-zeolite. Ethylene conversion on a CrNZ catalyst was 9.6% and propylene conversion, 17.8% with 100% selectivity. The activity of the zeolite catalysts increased considerably with increasing pressure. The catalytic activity of the various zeolites with different cations is tabulated. (BLM)
