Title: Puerto Rico pushes conservation, stresses solar

The conclusion of a two-part story on energy conservation in the Caribbean focuses on Puerto Rico's energy goals and supplies. High energy costs and almost total dependence on oil imports have brought active support for the energy office's program of conservation and building efficiency, its efforts to educate the public and industry on energy use, and a search for alternate energy sources, primarily solar energy. A number of building delamping and street relamping projects are completed. Other projects have replaced central-air-conditioning systems with room units. Industrial plants and commercial buildings must all meet federal energy-efficiency standards. Solar technology is being developed to take advantage of the island's major resources--sun and sand. Large-scale installation of solar hot water and heating systems are being installed and plans are developing for solar air conditioning, solar power generation, and solar steam generation. Still in the proposal stage are solar steam generation for food processing and development of the trade winds and ocean currents as alternate energy sources.
