Radiation physics with applications in medicine and biology
- ed.
This book is the second edition of the original text published in 1981. The book is intended to provide a concise introduction to those aspects of nuclear physics and associated ionizing radiations which have applications in medicine and biology. The author succeeds in his objective, accomplishing it in seven chapters. The book begins with the fundamentals of the interaction of radiation with matter, where a discussion of energy absorption coefficients has been added in the second edition. This is followed by a discussion of nuclear reactions and radioisotope production. Detectors for nuclear radiations are described, as is the physics of the radiations resulting form nuclear decay. With this groundwork laid, applications to medicine and biology are discussed, with a chapter specifically dedicated to neutrons in this regard. Accelerator-based applications are dealt with in Chapter 7. Most of the material in these chapters is unchanged from the first edition, a not unexpected finding, since much of the book deals with fundamentals well presented in that edition. The author has added a short chapter on the physical basis of radiation protection, defining radiation units, describing population radiation levels in the UK, and discussing late effects from significant radiation doses.
