Experimental study of 6 passive and 3 active solar water heaters installed in residences

Conference · · Proc. Annu. Meet. - Am. Sect. Int. Sol. Energy Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6552500
Performance and cost data on passive solar water heaters were obtained by building and installing 6 systems (4 batch heaters and 2 thermosyphons)j in typical residences in the mid-Atlantic region. Temperatures, hot water consumption, auxiliary heating energy, and parasitic operating energy were monitored and used to calculate solar fraction, collector thermal efficiency, and overall system efficiency. Comparison of these results with typical active systems shows that the passive systems can be equally cost-effective. Freeze-protection and other design considerations for passive systems are examined.
