Search for soft phonon modes in Zr/sub 2/Ni

Inelastic neutron-scattering measurements have been made on a (zeta00) transverse acoustic phonon branch of Zr/sub 2/Ni at several temperatures between 300 and 10 K. The experiment was motivated by previous ultrasonic results which showed a large softening of the related elastic constant C/sub 66/. No phonon softening was observed in our experiment, but a fairly unusual dispersion was noted.
