Two Minimum Energy Dwelling houses in Mission Viejo, Calif. have been designed and built. The goal is to reduce energy consumption in a typical southern California home by at least 50 percent and encourage the American building industry to adopt its energy-saving features. Most of MED's energy savers are built-in and thus not readily visible, except for the rooftop solar collectors. Some of the features are: (1) a patio cover to shade large windows and glass door, (2) solar collectors for solar-assisted water and space heating, (3) a tile roof, (4) extra-thick exterior walls to allow for heavier wall insulation (R-19), (5) a plastic membrane under stucco to eliminate infiltration, (6) double-pane windows with shutters between panes, (7) windows shaded with vertical wings, (8) slab insulation, (9) light-color paint, (10) foam-filled front door with magnetic weatherstrip, and (11) early insulation of difficult areas such as corners and window perimeters.
