Recent observational and theoretical investigations in astrophysics and cosmology are discussed in a collection of review essays. Topics addressed include the early universe, superstring theory, quantum gravity, gravitational radiation, the cosmic microwave background, the age of the universe, accretion disks in AGN, superconducting cosmic strings, nascent elliptical galaxies, difficulties with inflationary cosmology, and dark matter. Consideration is given to binary X-ray sources, very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, SN 1987A, polarization and the nature of the eclipsing medium in PSR 1957 + 20, the evolution of msec pulsars without low-mass X-ray binaries, cosmic gamma-ray bursts, the Gamma-ray Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, thermal Comptonization models for gamma-ray emission from black-hole sources, the 1973 X-ray outburst of 4U1145 - 61, neutrino astronomy and neutrino properties, and simultaneous line emission of solar-flare X-rays and gamma rays by protons.
