Biological applications of spin exchange

Journal Article · · ACS Symp. Ser.; (United States)
The physical concept of and considerable experimental data dealing with the events that lead to close encounter dependent broadening of the N-hyperfine lines of nitroxides have been treated by several authors. This report presents the phenomena limiting line broadening due to spin--spin interactions and treats biological applications. The concentration dependencies of the interactions between spin labels and other spin labels, paramagnetic ions, and paramagnetic chelates are presented. The line broadening efficiencies are compared. The effects of solvent viscosity and charge-charge interactions with respect to both interactions between spin labels and spin labels with other charged paramagnetic agents are treated. Collisional frequency in porous beads is treated in terms of diffusion barriers. Biological applications are presented showing restriction of molecular motion of spin labels dissolved in the aqueous interior of cells. The phenomenon of increased restriction to spin label motion accompanying specific causes of cell death is treated.
