Electrochemical oxidation of berkelium in two-phase systems. I. Stability of Bk(IV) in the system HNO/sub 3/-D2EHPA
Autoreduction of traces of Bk(IV) in the two-phase system D2EHPA (decane)-HNO/sub 3/ has been studied under extraction equilibrium conditions. Electrochemical oxidation has been used in combination with simultaneous extraction for obtaining Bk(IV). It has been proved that the Bk(IV) reduction kinetics can be described by a first-order equation with respect to the Bk(IV) concentration. The dependence of the effective reduction constants on the concentration of D2EHPA (0.001-0.1 M) and HNO/sub 3/ (1-10 M) have been studied. The mechanism of the reduction process has been proposed. It has been shown that Bk(IV) reduction occurs primarily in the aqueous phase and is effected by the extractant dissolved in the aqueous phase.
