This bibliography of mineral and energy resources of the USSR was born out of a reading list for a seminar on geology and mineral resources of the Soviet Union which was given at the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at Queens College of the City University of New York during the spring semester of 1976. The idea of the seminar was to introduce students to the regional geology and mineral deposits of the country which occupies one-sixth of the surface of our planet. English translations of selected papers on Soviet geology were used during the seminar. Each student had to present two papers covering either a definite kind of mineral deposit or a genetic type of mineral deposit. Volumes 1 to 16 of International Geology Review (IGR) served as the most exclusive source of information and were used to prepare a reading list which consisted of 50 pages. The seminar served its purpose of making the students aware of the amount of geological information available in English translation from Russian, the language in which about 40% of the geologic literature of the world is published. The publication of selected translations from the leading Soviet geological journals continues in IGR. Should this bibliography prove to be a useful source of information to users of IGR and other researchers, periodic supplements will be considered.
