It has been proved that yttrium polonide and polonium dioxide react with tantalum pentaiodide and ammonium iodide. It has been shown tensimetrically that their reaction yields polonium tetraiodide which occurs in the vapor phase in the diiodide form. The temperature for the start of the yttrium polonide reaction with tantalum pentaiodide and ammonium iodide, which lies in the ranges 230-240 and 370-380/sup 0/C respectively under the experimental conditions, has been determined. The extent of reaction was 84-99.7% for tantalum pentaiodide and 90-99.4% for ammonium iodide. At 100/sup 0/C and on 2-h exposure, polonium dioxide reacts with tantalum pentaiodide and ammonium iodide, converting respectively 98 and 100% polonium into the iodide form.
