Horizontal divestiture and the petroleum industry

Book ·
OSTI ID:6547586

This book evaluates the desirability and major effects of currently proposed horizontal divestiture legislation on the energy industry and the nation as a whole. Congress has considered legislation to divest petroleum companies of their operations in other energy fields such as coal, uranium, and nuclear fuels. The authors apply the standards of workable competition to the energy industry and its various subsectors for the purpose of determining whether these pending actions would improve the industry's competitive performance. The study is based on comprehensive data obtained from twenty-three large petroleum companies. The analysis supports a conclusion that such proposed divestitures would not only be at variance with existing public policy toward industry, but would very likely retard the development of non-petroleum energy sources.
