Effects of SO/sub 2/ fumigation on net photosynthesis of Douglas fir

Book ·
OSTI ID:6546990
Sulfur dioxide affected net assimilation in three-year-old Douglas fir seedlings by causing an increase in assimilatory rate during the time of fumigation and a subsequent decline in rate. Thus, SO/sub 2/ may act as a limiting factor in primary production of Douglas fir where pollution levels are lower than 1 ppm SO/sub 2/. Single short term fumigations were shown to have deleterious effects that were measurable for up to one month. Respiration appeared to be unaffected by SO/sub 2/ fumigation. Increased net photosynthesis during fumigation is believed to be a function of decreased total leaf resistance due to increased stomatal aperture.
