Coal distribution, January--September 1988

From January through September 1988, coal production and distribution totaled all-time record highs for the first three quarters of the year. This was in response to strong demand from both domestic and foreign coal users. Highlights of the data for the first three quarters of 1988 include that coal production totaled 705 million short tons, nearly 5 percent above the level a year earlier; coal stocks held by producers and distributors on September 30, 1988, were 31 million short tons, 3 million short tons above the level they started the year at; total coal shipments were 28 million short tons higher than the level a year earlier (this was composed of 15 million short tons in additional domestic coal shipments and 13 million short tons in additional foreign coal shipments); and the share of coal shipped by railroads for domestic use reached 57.5 percent compared to 56.9 percent for the same three quarters of 1987.
