A CF/sub 4/ laser for producing near 16 ..mu..m radiation utilizing a line tunable CO/sub 2/ laser as an optical pumping source is described. The device uses a cryogenically cooled optical pumping cavity containing molecular CF/sub 4/ gas. An optical resonant cavity formed around the optical pumping cavity induces oscillations of near 16 ..mu..m radiation from the ..nu../sub 2/ + ..nu../sub 4/ yields ..nu../sub 2/ transition in the molecular CF/sub 4/ gas.
