The problems encountered in stimulation of deep, hot wells have become more critical as the search for energy leads to deeper and deeper wells. Less than 10 yr ago, wells in the 10,000-ft range stretched the limits of treatment fluid technology. Today, both materials and equipment are regularly called upon to function satisfactorially at depths in excess of 20,000 ft. Conventional hydraulic fracturing treatments using propping agents have met with limited success in 20,000-plus ft wells. Most operators are reluctant to use solid proppants for fear of screen-out and extremely costly remedial work. Since most of the currently productive, ultra deep formations are carbonates, modified fracturing techniques using acid to etch the fracture faces and provide conductive flow channels in lieu of injecting solid propping agents have proved effective and provided a method of successful stimulation. Experience in the Anadarko Basin and the Delaware Basin has proved that ultra deep wells can be routinely stimulated successfully. Since the formations are carbonate, the alternate stage pad and acid treatments are standard and few efforts have been made toward conventional fracturing treatments with propping agents.
