Thermionic emission, vapor composition, chemical activity, and weight loss have been measured over a range of compositions in the Gd-B system. Values are reported for various compositions in the GdB/sub 4/ phase and for one composition in the GdB/sub 6/ phase. The congruently vaporizing composition at 1700 K was found to be GdB/sub 4.03/ , with an effective work function of 3.27 eV. The work function of GdB/sub 6/ is near 4.02 eV. At congruency, the Gd-B system loses mass approximately twice as fast as the La-B system.
