Micelle research, uses, problems probed

One area attracting particular attention in micelle research is the use of micellar solutions of various surfactants as injection fluids to enhance tertiary recovery of oil from oil fields. These solutions produce low interfacial tensions at the oil-micellar solution interface, and help displace the oil toward the producing wells. Recently micelle research has focused especially on several areas, including (1) synthesis, purification, and characterization on new surfactants, particularly nonionics; (2) kinetics of micellization by fast reaction kinetics; (3) application of spectroscopic techniques to understanding mechanisms of reactions and interactions in micellar media; (4) micellar catalysis of organic reactions; (5) aggregate formation in nonpolar media; (6) understanding the state of solubilizates and the mechanism of solubilization; (7) biological and physiological implications of micelles; and (8) theoretical developments in understanding monomer-micelle equilibria and stepwise aggregation.
