A discussion covers general requirements for the proper use of instrumentation in water and wastewater monitoring, treatment, control, and recycle; methods of analysis and instruments that are available for laboratory monitoring of priority pollutants (the 129 pollutants defined in the 1976 Consent Decree), including gas chromatography coupled with computerized mass spectrometry and, for nonvolatile or unstable compounds, programed high-performance liquid chromatography for trace organics and atomic absorption, colorimetry, and ion-selective electrodes for metals; the current status of each of these techniques; and problems in their adaptation to in-line industrial monitoring of pollutants.
