The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposes the use of gas chromatography (GC) or high-performance liquid chromatography and GC/mass spectrometry to test 113 organic toxic pollutants, including purgeable halocarbons and aromatics, phenols, acrolein/acrylonitrile, and chlorinated hydrocarbons; the use of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy for elemental analysis of toxic metals, including lead; use of the BOD/sub 5/ carbonaceous method; and requirements for sample preservation and maximum holding times from 1.8 min for phenols to 46.9 min for 2,4-dinitrophenol prior to completion of analysis. The use of these methods will be required when filing applications for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination system permits, state certifications, and compliance monitoring under the amended Clean Water Act of 1977. The test procedures are discussed in detail. Comments must be filed by 2/1/80.
