Dependence of the drag reduction efficiency of polyelectrolytes on their conformation in aqueous solutions

Although the drag reduction (DR) phenomenon has been known for about 25 yr, no universally accepted theory explaining this effect has yet emerged. Recently, considerable efforts have been directed toward pointing out the relations between the molecular characteristics of polymeric additives and their drag reducing efficiency. The purpose of the present study was to: (1) correlate changes in DR efficiency with well-established conformational changes of polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions; and (2) to investigate the effect of controlled chemical modifications of water-soluble polymers on their drag reduction efficiency. The results of this investigation do not support claims mentioned in the literature that more flexible polymers tend to be better drag reducers. They are in accordacce with more recent reports suggesting that flexibility of a macro molecule is less important in determining its drag reduction efficiency than its degree of extension. (17 refs.)
