Shredded rubber tires as a bulking agent

Journal Article · · Compost Sci./Land Util.; (United States)

Shredded rubber tires are being used at the Camden City, N.J., Sewage Sludge Composting Facility as a bulking agent. Experiments indicate that thermophilic temperatures were rapidly reached in all compost piles and maintained at levels above 55chemically bondSC for at least five days. Materials balance analysis demonstrates that a reduction in total and volatile solids of 42% and 54% respectively can be achieved using shredded rubber. This process not only enhances the sewage composting operations but also provides a suitable means of disposal for automobile tires. (2 diagrams, 2 graphs, 1 photo, 6 references, 5 tables)
