Alkyl peroxide complexes of the group 4 transition metals have been invoked as intermediates in titanium-catalyzed epoxidation of allylic alcohols, in the Shell propylene oxide synthesis and in the direct reaction of dioxygen with group 4 metal alkyls. They report herein the synthesis, structure and reactivity of some of the first well-characterized examples of this class of compounds: Cp*/sub 2/Hf(R)(OOCMe/sub 3/) (Cp* = (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/Me/sub 5/); R = Cl, H, CH/sub 3/, CH/sub 2/CH/sub 3/, CH/sub 2/CH/sub 2/CH/sub 3/, CH/sub 2/CH/sub 2/CH/sub 2/CH/sub 3/, CH/sub 2/CHMe/sub 2/, CH=CHCMe/sub 3/, C/sub 6/H/sub 5/, m-C/sub 6/H/sub 3/(CH/sub 3/)/sub 2/), and Cp*(eta/sup 5/,eta/sup 1/-C/sub 5/-(CH/sub 3/)/sub 4/CH/sub 2/CH/sub 2/CH/sub 2/)Hf(OOCMe/sub 3/).
