In situ measurements of ClO and BrO were obtained during the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment in 1987 and the Arctic Airborne Stratospheric Experiment in 1989. The chemical evolution of air sampled by the ER-2 aircraft has been mapped onto larger regions of the polar vortex using global distributions of potential vorticity and potential temperature. Zonally averaged rates for loss of ozone were calculated using a photochemical model and the global distributions of ClO and BrO. Using reaction rates for the ClO-ClP mechanism reported by Sander et al. (1989) and the BrO-ClO mechanism reported by Sander and Friedl (1988), we conclude that the measured disappearance of ozone in the Antarctic exceeds the calculated rate of destruction by nearly 50%. Uncertainties in the kinetics of the ClO-Cl{sub 2}O{sub 2} system, and their impact on our conclusions, will be discussed. Additional mechanisms that might be responsible for loss of ozone in the polar regions will be discussed.
