New solution generating transformations for the stationary axially-symmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations

Exact solution generating methods for the stationary axiallysymmetric Einstein-Maxwell equations are investigated in this thesis. In particular, the attempt has been made to extend Cosgrove's vacuum symmetry groups, Q and anti Q, to the electrovac case. The primary method used is that of invarient groups, but due to the close relationship to Baecklund transformations, a brief review of the latter is given. The symmetry groups Q and anti Q are found to exist for the electrovac case, but as of yet their application has met with minimal success. It is still felt by the author that more of the vacuum results pertaining to Q and anti Q can be extended to the electrovac case.
