Journal Article · · Astrophys. J., Lett. Ed.; (United States)

Spectra of NGC 5506, an X-ray galaxy, show strong emission lines, with widths of permitted and forbidden lines > or approx. =1500 km s/sup -1/. Thus NGC 5506 is properly classified as a Seyfert 2 galaxy, rather than as a narrow line galaxy. The measured rotation curve shows velocities increasing out to r=48''=8.3 kpc; and a mass M/sub 8.3/approx.4 x 10/sup 10/M/sub sun/. The total mass is Mapprox.1 x 10/sup 11/M/sub sun/ if the rotation curve remains flat out to the de Vaucouleurs radius, r=15.0 kpc.
