What's new in nondestructive testing of welds and heat-affected zones
- Hellier Technical Training and Consulting, Nantic, CT (United States)
Recently, there have been many innovations in nondestructive testing, especially in the area of weld inspection. With the current concern for cost control and the quest for higher sensitivity and improved record retention, NDT has come to the forefront. In fact, there has been such extensive activity in NDT development and innovation, this paper will only be able to address some of the most noteworthy. Some of the recent advances in nondestructive testing methods for welds includes more creative use of borescope examination, thermography, fiber optics, digital radiography and ultrasonics, and laser scanning. Improvements to such age old inspection processes as magnetic particle, dye penetrant and eddy current processes are also emerging onto the scene.
